This post concerns a US company based in Massasshussets, operating in Poland.
Hi all,
Today, during my routine performance evaluation, I was told I was underperforming and that I would be put on a PIP starting next week. This came as a massive shock because I've been given more work and additional responsibilities steadily. When I said as much and asked them to explain why they'd been adding to my load if I was already underperforming, they told me:
"Your work is really good. It's how you get there that needs work."
I work in Internal Communications. I've never once missed a deadline or a deliverable. I write five different newsletters, organize all-company events, write briefings for senior leadership, and blogs for inclusion, diversity, and equity. I also help employee networks with their communications. I have strong relationships outside of my team, and I'm regularly praised for my work - I even got an internal award recently. In Q1, I also launched a project that had been in the works for years before I joined the company. Once I was put on it, it took off and was completed. I have been working hard towards a promotion but got a PIP instead.
The reasons for this PIP make little sense to me. They said I lack professionalism and quality decision-making and quoted stuff like:
- My agreeing to support the Veteran Network with a blog for U.S. Military Appreciation Month (wouldn't that be going above and beyond?!)
- "Unprofessional conduct" during a team meeting in which I got mildly frustrated. This was a meeting about that project that wouldn't advance until I got my hands on it. I was asked to work overtime, deep into my evenings, to meet some arbitrary deadline, only for the project to pause for months due to my team's lack of input once I completed my share.
- Having booked a return flight from a business trip that I ended up not taking -- please note I asked in advance not to be forced to book a return flight, as I wouldn't be returning to Poland, but going elsewhere instead for vacation and didn't want the company to have to pay for the said flight or to return to Poland first before flying out. This wasn't granted due to potential visa issues and other internal policies, so I had to book the flight and then purchase one on my own. The only reason the company is even aware that I didn't take the flight is because I was transparent from the get-go in an attempt to save the company some money.
None of this makes sense. I have been given more and more work, and there's literally nothing they can fault on my work other than a typo here and there, which is a common occurrence for the entire team. Is there anything I can do other than start looking for a new job?
EDIT: Just wanted to add that I moved to Poland for this job, from a different European country. Firing me means I'll be left jobless in a foreign country and most likely have to pack up and return.
