“The Plague Year” by Lawrence Wright is a long, historic article in the New Yorker about the efforts to deal with SARS-CoV-2 in the US. (If the web link demands signing up, try installing The New Yorker app, which allowed me access without creating an account.)
I’m posting this hear solely as a suggestion for people who’ve read And The Band Played On, because of the style of writing and similar subject matter. As with the book by Randy Shilts, it is a sequence of vignettes, in chronological order, about researchers, health care professionals, doctors, scientists, economists, politicians, and patients, from a year ago January to last fall (so the story isn’t over yet). It’s not my intent to get into the politics or even much of a discussion of the article. It’s simply that if you enjoyed And the Band Plays On as a history book, you might also enjoy this article.
