This was our movie of the week, from Kanopy. Olympia Dukakis as Stella and Brenda Fricker as Dotty play an aging lesbian couple living together in Maine; Dotty is essentially blind. When Dotty’s clueless granddaughter puts her into a nursing home, Stella breaks her out and they head to Canada to get married, protecting their mutual rights. (Don’t ask me why Canada and not Massachusetts, as MA beat Nova Scotia by a few months.)
It’s somewhat dated, but still a touching story. They pick up a young man, Prentice (played by Ryan Doucette) on the way, and Discover he has his own family problems. The male loving half of their anticipated audience is treated to a nude scene of Prentice as well as a hilarious scene of his father, totally nude including full frontal shots, trying to stop the three of them leaving in Stella’s truck. How they did this in the stage play is beyond me.
It’s largely comedic, with Stella’s cringeworthy potty mouth a strong contributor. Brenda Fricker, doing a wonderful job playing opposite her, had this to say:
Of all the films I've made, only three do I remember where I felt I'd moved forward as an actress: Cloudburst (2011), My Left Foot (1989) and The Field (1990).
