Our dnd group is comprised of my friends, my spouse, and myself. Normally, it's all good fun and problem solving, but there are times where it feels as though I am targeted specifically by our DM. Maybe it's the group dynamic, but despite being the more polite member of the group, I am often the butt of jokes or jeers. None of my complaints are about my spouse, I should specify. They have also noticed these behaviors and pointed them out to me.
For setting, we are playing the undermountain dungeon in Waterdeep.
When we walk into a strange room and I roll for perception, I am met with rolling eyes and comments about "There's not always more to a room." from the DM and another player.
When a room has a lot of descriptors or unique properties explained, I roll investigations. I am met with similar reactions from the DM and the same player.
My first character had telepathy and I also was the one chosen to wear a bronze mask and speak with a mad character who offered two truths and a lie answers to three questions I could ask. When I asked the questions, I received EXTREMELY general answers that literally gave no elaboration to information we sought. The other players actually spoke up about this when the DM attempted to claim that I did not ask specific enough questions but he did retcon the information I received. When I asked "Where is the way down to the lower levels?" One of the truths I received was "The stairs". This answer was retconned to more specific directions than that because my spouse and the other non toxic friend voiced complaints after listening to the interaction I had.
When we ran into the two ettins smithing, I used my telepathy and detect thoughts and when I would ask things like "What do you do with the items you make?" I was given the answer "We bring them to Xanathar." With no further elaboration. When I further asked "Where do you bring them to Xanathar?" I was given the answer "By handing them to Xanathar." With no further info.
No one else is really given any disdain or frustration when they attempt to solve puzzles or search or roll for things. The other players are highly possessive of loot and coins and I no longer bother asking for a fair split of treasures we find despite all of us working to get it. My spouse is so new to dnd that he was unaware that it was inappropriate to start looting a room and corpses while combat was still going on, but this is a common issue.
So my solution to a greedy table was to instead, look for other things to loot. Snatching up anything I can to sell. We found silk bed sheets, a wyvern skeleton (I was able to harvest teeth), various equipment items such as packs or crafting kits.
When I attempt to sell things like this, because these things are literally all I am able to loot, it is a constant struggle to find buyers for things such as silk (as a trade good), wyvern teeth, and used equipment. When I crafted scrolls using XGTE, no one would buy them because the DM felt as though this would be "printing money". Or the inevitable question of "What do you even need money for?" When I have a total of 60 gold whereas our ranger has around 400, barbarian has 250ish, fighter has in the 200s.
My first character, a wizard who always remained in the backline behind my animated corpses, was always targeted by sometimes all attacks by all of the goblins or whatever enemy we faced during every single combat encounter until inevitably, he was targeted by a zombie beholder out of 4 zombies, an echo knight and his clone, a raging barbarian, a ranger, and my wizard by the first attack the enemy made before my turn ever arrived. My character died immediately and was disintegrated. I can't help but feel that being focused in every single encounter is sort of cheap.
And finally, sometimes every single turn in combat, I am constantly stopped and questioned on why I am able to do more damage with cantrips at level 5, why I have my my amount of health, why I have my number of spell slots, how did I come to my proficiency bonus of 3 as a level 5. I had finally blown up because no one else gets questioned constantly. I have always had to prove my work at arriving to stats or features or feats on my characters despite never having pulled any funny math or cheated. No one else is treated this way and honestly I may have been quite rude with my rebutle, but I did finally explode and complain that I am constantly met with adversity at a table in my own home just for wanting to make any amount of gold, explore rooms, engage with creatures, or even cast a spell.
Am I the problem?
