Why isn't there a drinking hole on French coffee cups?

Having been to a few French cities including Versailles, Nice, Cannes, Paris, etc... and also having visited Monaco, it became evident if you ask for a coffee to go from a cafe (blasphemy) or from McDonald's (for example), there is no hole for drinking coffee. Even Paul has this weird opening thats not really for sipping, and the paper cup falls apart after two sips. I have attached a photo I took in Versailles.

The only guess I can make is that it's simply not French culture to walk around drinking coffee like an American and one must sit down and enjoy their coffee.

One funny thing did happen to me when I asked "How do I drink this?". The barista looked at me like I was a total idiot, removed the lid and showed me to put the cup to my face. Indeed, I simply took my key and poked a drinking hole like a North American barbarian.
