when you see a stranger walk down the street or just randomly make eye contact do you smile or not?

As an American I guess its "in my culture" to do this and not realize it. I personally don't like when someone asks "how are you" because I think its weird the older I get as a greeting. A friendly hello is enough for me personally. However I do smile and nod here and there because I just do.
For your country is it weird to pass by someone and smile/nod if he/she makes eye contact with you by mistake or is this considered fake/weird?
