Wind Turbine Gearbox Solution: local DC network?
I just watched this excellent RE video about some of the practical challenges around engineering and maintaining wind turbines and the trade offs between gearbox and direct drive boxes. I was wondering why we canāt have wind turbines that generate DC that is combined and sent to a hub that converts the power from those local turbines into a grid-compatible format.
Iām not an engineer, but I have some basic knowledge and am an āenthusiastā about these things. I know there are trade offs between AC and DC power transmission, but HVDC transmission is clearly possible and in-use around the world, so that shouldnāt be a huge issue. I feel like Iām missing something either at the mechanical -> DC part or at the DC -> AC aggregation and conversion steps, but Iād be curious to hear others thoughts!
