Beginner Question: Open-Drain and GPIO Pin Voltage Detection

Post Body

Ok, an IC has an open-drain pin that is normally used for an indicator LED.

I want to have an MCU control the LED instead. So, if I connect the LED and requisite resistor to a different GPIO pin on my MCU, do I still need a current-limiting resistor from Vcc to my open-drain pin on my IC, or can I wire Vcc directly to the pin and tap off the trace to send the signal to my MCU GPIO input pin?

What's Best Practice here? It seems logical to me that I'd still want to limit the current going into the open-drain pin, but I'm just not sure how this is usually done.

Perhaps I should use the internal GPIO pullup then connect directly to the open-drain pin on the IC?
