Original post After the comments on the original post, I made arrangements to borrow a nice shiny differential probe and compatible scope, so that I could check things out again.
As it turned out, using a passive probe wasn't the problem. The original oscilloscope was the problem. Using the Rigol DS1204 (I think), there's a massive bounce shown on the ground line. With the Tek MDO3000-something, the ground is very clean. Results on the voltage rail match up nicely, and there's no change on the Tek between using the passive probe or differential probe.
