Power supply variable voltage output

Post Body

I'm just considering starting a simple desktop power supply board and one of the things I'd like is a variable voltage output from a switching regulator for, say, 0.8V up to 30V or so.

I want to make use of an ATX power supply and figure that the 12V lines could supply the variable output. I still have some learning to do, obviously_^

Do I need two different circuits (one for step-up, one for step down)? Or is there some other regulation circuit that works for boost up/step down regulators?
