Surge Protector Meltdown
Post Body

Purchased this 8-outlet Amazon Basics surge protector in the fall of 2021 so it has been in use for less than 3 years. It is only ever been used for entertainment type devices like tv, dvd player, etc. Only 5 of the 8 outlets were occupied. It has never been used for any high power appliances like air conditioners, or heaters. When this happened nothing was turned on so only standby current should have been flowing through it at the time.

The outlet it was plugged into doesn’t have a ground pin (most of the outlets in the old house don’t). Everything that was plugged in here is fine, and I haven’t found any issues with any of the other electronics / surge protectors in the house.

Any thoughts on what caused this? Was this just a faulty surge protector that had a ticking time bomb defect, or could this in some way be related to the house wiring?
