What to do with cellulose insulation around LED recessed lights in an attic?
Post Body

Hello everyone,

I'm doing a bathroom reno, and am adding some low-wattage LED recessed lights. 9 or 12 watt units, wet-location rated, etc.

These units all have heatsink fins on the top, as LED's are very sensitive to overheating. This makes me question what I'm supposed to do when installing them into a second-floor ceiling, where the space above is the attic.

If I just install them as usual, then they will end up getting buried in 12" of cellulose insulation, which defeats the heatsink fins. It will just smother the units completely, and cook them.

I know there are IC-rated fixtures specifically for this purpose, but if the fixture is NOT IC-rated, is there a special kind of mount or fixture I should use that will give the lights some breathing room in the attic?

Thank you.
