Why isn't my new lamp working with the wall switch?

I got a new desk lamp and plugged it into the same power strip my previous lamp was plugged into. Before when I entered my room I could flip the wall switch and the light would turn on. This one seems to turn off when I switch the power off and not turn back on til I push the button on the lamp itself. Should I return the lamp and get a different one or is there something I'm missing?
