How can house prices continuously increase above inflation?

I keep hearing this argument in the U.K., where our economy is very closely linked to property market.

But I don’t understand how this could be the case that houses will ‘always be a good investment’?

What would be the signs to look out for if this is a bubble and there may be a crash in the short - mid term?
