Basic but Unusual Question Related to Diabetes
Post Body

Required Information:

Female, 40, average height, obese but doing well losing weight (down 10lbs in about 3 weeks), a multitude of medications none of which apply to this, a massive medical history but only two conditions apply to this (mitochondrial disease and diabetes)

As a result of genetically confirmed mitochondrial disease, I developed diabetes (this is not uncommon). Basically the mitochondria within the cells in my pancreas can no longer create enough energy for insulin production. I have always been on insulin and it is very difficult to control. My understanding is that even though the symptom presentation and treatment issues are the same as t1 diabetes, this is not t1 because it is not autoimmune. T2 diabetes doesnโ€™t seem to fit and having that label has caused more than one medical professional to improperly understand the severity. Is there a label or type of diabetes for when a cause is known and it is a different related disease? I basically just want to be better able to communicate the situation without needing to give a seminar if possible.

Thank you for even reading and for any help! You guys in the medical field are the only reason I was here to celebrate my recent 40th birthday.
