My boyfriend of one year recently tested positive for chlamydia and I tested negative. He hadn’t gotten tested prior to our relationship. Is it possible I had a false negative?
Post Body

For context, I’m 26F and he’s 30M. We met prior to the pandemic and have been together ever since and live together. We both rarely ever go out, except if we go on a vacation with friends for a weekend or whatever. Pretty much have had unprotected sex this whole time.

He’s one of the most communicative and honest partners I have had. Prior to our relationship, neither of us asked the other to get STI tested, so that was on us as a couple.

I was, however, tested in Feb 2020 and we met in April 2020. My tests all came back negative at that time.

He recently went to the doctor because he hadn’t had the best health insurance all throughout 2020. He got everything tested and I guess asked for an STI panel just since it’s been almost 2 years since he’s been to the doctor. He had no symptoms based on what he told me when he got results.

His results for Chlamydia came back positive. I literally freaked out, because I already have relationship anxiety issues and this is one of my biggest fears. Obviously my mind went to: he cheated. But he told me the news calmly and said it must have been from before we met in between his ex and meeting me when he was single. He said it may have been a night when he was drunk and got with some girl. He felt awful that he had given me something and said he really had no idea since he didn’t have symptoms.

I’m trying so hard to believe him, because he hasn’t given me a reason not to trust him, up until now. But I got tested that same day and my test results are negative. Which made me feel even more anxious.

For reference, I got a urine test — it was NOT my first urine of the day and I think I peed like an hour prior to the test. I heard the urine tests for women aren’t as accurate as the swabs.

One other important piece of info is that for half of 2020 it seems I had been dealing with what I thought was a UTI for so long. I even went to a urologist but she said it was negative for UTI culture. At the same time prior to seeing the urologist I had a cyst on my tailbone that I took both Bactrim and Doxycycline for. That was back in this past February 2021.

My question is, IF he did have it prior to our relationship, and I got it, would my doxy and Bactrim have killed it off? Would this explain my negative result, that somehow between Feb and now I didn’t contract it? OR, what are the chances this WAS a false negative for me? What about a false positive for him?

TDLR: my boyfriend of 1 year was recently tested positive for chlamydia and I was negative. He said it was probably from before he met me and he’s been asymptomatic. I had UTI symptoms for half of this year but when I got tested by the urologist it came back negative for UTI. I did have to take antibiotics for something else months ago. Could this have killed it off in me and explained a negative result months later? Or is it a false negative for me? False positive for him?

Timeline: April 2020: met July 2020: became official in a relationship Nov 2020-Feb2021: I had UTI symptoms bad but culture was negative Jan-Feb2021: I took Bactrim and Doxycycline for a different condition (cyst) thought it would also help (non existent) uti symptoms and I would still have burning sensstion for a few months July 2021: boyfriend Had first physical at doctors in 2 years and got everything checked out, came back positive for Chlamydia. I tested negative. I’ve not had burning for a month or two

Any help is so appreciated. I’m giving myself headaches thinking about all of this. I want to just believe him but my anxiety is awful and it’s just making me think and think.

Edit: info about being negative for uti
