COVID Question - How Long Should I Self Quarantine?
Post Body

I am a 43 year old white male, 5 foot 6, 250 lbs. Regarding COVID symptoms, I feel normal and have not tested.

The potential issue is for two weeks, my two housemates decided to drive from San Diego to San Francisco and to LA. I am concerned because this was just before New Years through this past Sunday. Once they left, the news kept talking about how terrible LA is getting relating to COVID, the hospital beds are all full, someone in LA dies from COVID once every eight minutes. In the middle of their trip, it was announced that people in California should absolutely NOT travel more than 120 miles due to the extra risks involved with the significant raise in numbers. Furthermore, people should basically just leave their house for essential needs; work, groceries, doctor apts, and important errands. I thought it was common sense to not go to gatherings and hang out with different people. Originally they were only going to SF, and then extended their visit to LA.

Anyways, at this point, if either of my housemates or anyone they hung out with had/has COVID, they are/were asymptomatic. In case my current housemates have gotten it and do not know, I thought it was safe to stay in my bedroom so I am not exposed. Is this overkill?

Also, how long should I remain in my room? In am stir crazy. They got home Sunday 1/10. The last time they were exposed to new people was Friday 1/8. Do I need to count 10 or 14 days from the 8th or 10th? Do I not need to hide in my room? Do I just need to sit 6 feet away from others in the living room and wear a mask for a certain number of days?

Some people think I am hugely overreacting while others think I should find new housemates. I just wish our views of COVID were similar,. Also, when I have housemates I can potentially affect, I try to be extra cautious.

TLDR: My two housemates spent two weeks visiting a variety of friends and family in SF and LA, when there was a travel restriction in effect, and while LA COVID numbers were rapidly getting worse. In case they were exposed to someone with COVID, or in case they are asymptomatic, do I need to stay in my room for 10 - 14 days after they got home, or is this overreacting?
