How serious is my mother’s liver disease based on her symptoms so far?
Post Body

Hi all,

Anyone who has or knows someone with liver disease is welcome to post their input.

Late last year, my mom, 66F, 150lbs, 5’2, was hospitalized for bleeding esophageal varies. She lost a lot of blood, had sepsis, and had to have 3 transfusions. She’s since bled once more and had to be hospitalized. She’s had two banding surgeries. With one coming up this month. She currently has low white blood cell and platelet count, indicating she probably has spleen issues. I’ve read that portal hypertension causes the spleen to back up. She also has no eosinophils, according to her most recent blood work. She has increased sensitivity to medication, most recently a med gave her a skin rash, and bruises easily. Not all meds do that though. Her previous blood work before this last one indicated anemia. But I don’t think her level is anemic anymore. She’s very cautious of her diet and stopped drinking alcohol.

I’ve been trying to research the severity, stages, and prognosis, but have come across different conclusions. She doesn’t have Ascites, swelling, or confusion. She may have had Ascites when she was first admitted for her Varices bleed. She was in quite bad condition, and she did look bloaty to me. I’m feeling like I need to know how severe this is, as in if she’s got quite a bit of time before things really take a down turn, or if that turn is already starting and things don’t look so good in the near future. What should I prepare for, is there anything I can do?
