Mother has been in the hospital for nearly a week now. Was admitted with shortness of breath. Was on BiPap with 70% o2 and breathing rate around 40. Saturation averaging around 94. Any sort of coughing, talking, eating, movement would lead to drops in saturation as low as 70. She was moved to another hospital and sedated to be put on ventilator. Started at 100% o2 and is now down to 40%. Xrays are not showing improvement but Dr feels confident clearing is starting to happen. Breathing rate is much more normalized around 18 if memory serves and saturation holding steady around 96.
What is the normal expected progression for getting better and getting worse? Seems good that she is being weened off the ventilator but cautiously optimistic since xray and ct scan don't show improvement in clearing up of the lungs. Does it just become a waiting game as long as she can breathe and hope treatment starts to help clear up the lungs?
Thank you for any and all information.
