39M, white, 6'3", 265lbs, US. As far back as I can remember (age 19), the hair follicles over most of my body (NOT head, hands, feet or genitals) have been red. Sometimes they get inflamed and painful and have a little, mostly clear, pus. I had one on my rear end that I popped this evening. It wasn't really painful, but it was a little inflamed and had a white head. The amount of almost-solid, yellow-white, semi-cheesy-smelling puss that forced it's way out was ridiculous for the size of the head, and hasn't happened before. It only had about a 1mm head, but about a 1/4 tsp of puss. Then it bled a pretty good amount for 10 minutes. There aren't any medications that I've been on this whole time or any regular ones that I was on at 19, that I can remember. I had a normal amount of acne when I was younger, some on the back. I'm prone to ingrown hairs on my face, if I shave. No major medical issues. Previously diagnosed as "folliculitis" in my early 20s. Prescribed a cream and body wash that didn't help. Don't remember what they were.
1) folliculitis or something else? 2) what would cause this? Genetics? Environmental? I'm wondering if I need to be worried about my kids having to deal with it. No sign of it on them yet (3M and 7moF) 3) should I expect these worsening puss-filled Inflammations (Boils?)?
