Hey Dad, how do I know when I should replace the brake pads on my bike?

I’ve had my bike for a good 10 years and it’s still running well. I started oiling the chain lately because I learned that’s important to do, but now I’m wondering what else I should tune up or get replaced. I ride probably 100 miles a month and nothing has been replaced before. I can still brake but I’m not sure what new brakes feel like as a comparison. Thanks Dad.
