I'm interested in seeing; as the social contract has been broken, how many would answer the call
As a tiny female with zero skills in any way related to combat, I’d volunteer for a non-combat role if a war broke out (I happen to speak the languages of the two most likely enemies for translation, for example). I don’t think we’re in any way likely to get drawn into an Afghanistan-style conflict with the current state of the military, so if the situation is bad enough for draft to come along, we must be repelling an invasion.
Edit: with zero skills related to modern combat. I can handle a bow and a sword, but unless we’re talking about a post-apocalyptic WW4 those probably won’t be relevant.
Which, I believe, counts as a non-combat role, which is exactly what I’m talking about.
We absolutely should. It would help to have those in the first place, though, in any meaningful numbers.

Much as the management and the funding of the RN deserves all the criticism that can be found under the sky, it is still the only NATO force apart from the US that can deploy a carrier group at any time anywhere in the world; countries with just one carrier cannot do that, as the carrier may be under repairs/in refit/post exercises/etc. 7 new frigates are in different constructions stages now, as well as other vessels. If the prospect of a full-scale war gets closer, money will be found to modernise rather than replace the older vessels and the RN can become a respectable, if not exactly leading, force again in fairly short order.
