Fungal Infections in Mammals ("The Last of Us" mild spoilers)
Post Body
Hi. At the very beginning of the show "The Last of Us," the following claims are made by a TV scientist:
- Fungi that we presently know about cannot survive in a host if the host's internal temperature is over 94 ℉ (35 ℃).
- If fungi were to evolve that could infect humans brains, there would be no treatments, preventatives or cures and it is not even possible to make any.
Yes, it's a TV show with dodgy science, but I'm wondering if there's some truth to these claims? Are there really no fungi that can live above 94 ℉? And don't we have antifungals already? Why wouldn't we be able to try to develop some treatments for brain fungus?
