I was reading up about an author called Psuedo-Dionysius, a very important figure in Orthodox Christianity. He’s called Pseudo-Dionysius because his works are attributed to the Biblical character Dionysius the Areopagite. We know that his works weren’t written by Dionysius because he quotes the 5th Century Philosopher Proclus, but that got me thinking. We’ve wrongly attributed the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John to those writers, even though it’s certain that they were not written by them because of the similarities between the Synoptics. So I was curious, is there a reason why we haven’t called these authors Pseudo-Mark or Pseudo-Luke?
