Why did my Meringue cookies come out like this?

Trying to make meringue mushrooms, did a 2-1 sugar-egg white ratio, dash of vanilla, pinch of cream of tar tar, slowly added the sugar and whipped until stiff peaks, baked per instructions. Why did they crack?
