Early Gaelic Patriarchy and Legends of Female Warriors
Post Body

Forgive me if I repeat any misconceptions here, as I know very little about the subject. I know that are prominent legends and stories of female warriors in Gaelic mythology, like that of Scathach, a skilled warrior who trained male heroes in combat. But from what I understand, and I may be misremembering this, some medieval Irish laws banned females from combat. Now I'm trying to understand how a society that would in real life disapprove of women in combat but would also create stories of positive female characters who are warriors. Has there been any scholarly research or theories to explain this? Or is the question based on a misunderstanding?
