OK so I'm just a silly little kiwi but I've been over the ditch a few times and I swear I've never seen Bondi that busy. Even on australia day or school holidays, it's nowhere near empty but I wouldn't say it's full either. The shops and cafes around the area are sweet, it's an easy bus ride from the CBD, there's a lot of lifeguards around so my clumsy arse won't be drowning and there's even shark warnings semi often. So in my books, that's mint. Sure there are better places around, but for someone just looking to get toasty and then have a pint, it's alright.
