Are things filling the role of churches/religion in the US?

I've asked this in European subreddits, but I figured I would ask here for US perspective. I have been interested by this article that talks about how church membership/religious affiliation is declining rapidly in the US (vs declinding steadily over the years in Europe). Which... is fine... if people replace it with something... but it seems like people are not replacing it with anything beyond perhaps... screens.
