What's the big deal with Kool-aid? Is it all it's hyped up to be?

As a brit, I feel like I'm significantly missing out. Kool-aid seeks life a massive deal in the US. But it almost looks like a juice concentrate in a powder form.
What am I missing? Would you recommend it to a foreigner as a staple of the US drinks market?
