Advice needed! Got an undergrad research position at a professor's group but the work isn't what I wanted!
Post Body

I know this is long but please help and give me some advice! You can skip to the questions part but I would appreciate if you read the stuff before it so that you can understand my dilemma a bit better.

A bit of background. I am an electrical engineering student at a small college in India looking to build a strong research profile for top grad schools abroad. Being from a school where research is basically null, I started emailing professors at some of the big unis here seeking a project. Now, my research interests include power electronics circuit design and other core electrical stuff. I was very clear about this in my emails. I received an acceptance from a professor whose research is focused on device parameters and parasitics and stuff.

Here's the thing though, all the analytical part is done. Right now they are working on developing a software to estimate these parameters and their software is also pretty much ready. My work would be to improve the python code. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING. I get it that coding is pretty much an essential skill these days and I do know enough to get by but this just feels way beyond my scope. I was so focused on building my profile in core electrical that I never learnt coding beyond the bare basics and software development just sounds so huge. I feel like I would be wasting their time by taking this up when a CS major would be so much better at this. Another thing is, the whole purpose of seeking this position was to build a good relationship with a renowned prof to get strong recommendation for grad school. But I haven't talked to him once, all the work is with a PhD student. So here are my questions:

1) This project is basically software development in python. I have 0 experience in something like this. My courses have nothing to do with it.Is it worth taking this up or would I be wasting everyone's time? 2) This project has nothing to do with the field I want to get into later. They are already done with the electronics stuff. Will this weaken my research profile? 3) Zero interaction with professor. Is it worth pursuing this if I might not even get a LOR?

Basically the main question is, should I take this up or should I quit? I worked so hard to finally get an acceptance and I don't know if I will ever get any again. I am extremely bummed, I have been trying so hard to get research projects in my field but I haven't been successful so far.
