Hey all, archaeology MS student here! I'm planning to start a PhD program in the Fall of 2017 (long time away), and then hit the trying to get a job in academia circuit.
I have an opportunity to get some more teaching experience this summer as a TA for a field school, BUT I am also trying to finish my thesis (by Dec. 2016). I need a substantial amount of time (weeks) over the summer to do data collection. The TA position is 300 hours over the course of 10 weeks, and they seem pretty flexible about when I would need to work. So, if I need to be gone for some weeks in the middle, maybe 4, I could make up those hours later.
The reasons I'm considering the position are 1- I need income to live on, 2- more teaching experience = better qualified when it comes to job seeking, 3- the professor running the field school is a friend of mine and really wants me to help, 4- IT WOULD BE FUN! Probably... I mean, at least I would be outside.
I'm weighing the additional teaching experience against the fact that I really need time to finish my thesis. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Is it better to have more teaching experience when applying to teaching positions? Or should I just ignore the whole resume (CV)-building situation and get my thesis done?
Thanks a bunch! I just drank a ton of Red Bull... apologies for weirdness.
