New PI funding strategy - major grants vs smaller first?

Post Body
I'm curious to hear what other people's strategy was regarding grant-writing when first starting out as a new PI. Did you go for major grants immediately (e.g. R01s) or did you start out with grants from smaller foundations or maybe R21s? I'm gearing up to start writing my first grant in preparation for officially launching my lab, and I'm wondering if it is a waste of time to go for R01s before the lab has made a name for itself? (I do have a decent amount of preliminary data for grants)
