A coworker just got an email with a classic predatory offer to "publish your paper in a competitive journal for a small fee"... but the paper in question was her student's essay. It had been pasted in full in the body of the email.
We're pretty sure the essay was taken somehow from TurnItIn. That's the only external place it was submitted, and the text was highlighted where it was the same as other sources (e.g. works cited). The essay isn't on Course Hero or other Google results, so we think the leak has to be from the LMS's TurnItIn portal. Has anyone else heard of TurnItIn leaking student work this way? We're seriously considering canceling our contract with them, if it's selling our students' IP to content mills.
