Much has been said about the cult of Pushkin who is said to be universally loved, but what about the reception of other writers? Are there stereotypes (for lack of a better word), associations of a kind as to what sort of people prefer Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Chekhov, Turgenev, Leskov, Bunin, Bulgakov, etc? What about the contemporary writers, both of the Yerofeevs, Sorokin, etc? How widely are some of these authors read? Basically feel free to write whatever you might think interesting about reading and literature in Russia, what patterns you've noticed amongst the (we are told very vast) reading public. Input about the popularity of non-Russian authors is welcome as well, I know Robert Burns was highly popular in the Soviet Union (oh, and you don't have to restrict your comment to today's Russia, if you can make historical observations that would be delightful as well).
