Can I limp my vehicle to the mechanic?? (Coolant Leak)

1.4 miles to mechanic
I noticed a smell when I parked at home last night. This morning I noticed a big leak under the front of the car. I opened the hood and realized the coolant reservoir is completely empty. I can’t easily recognize where the leak is coming from.
MY QUESTION: Can I fill the reservoir back up and then drive directly to the mechanic? Or do I need to pay to have it towed for just a mile. (Significant budget restrictions)
