While driving my 2010 Ford Fusion Sel, recently I've noticed the digital fuel gauge(### miles to E) has been dropping 2 miles at a time. This doesn't happen all the time though, yesterday my normal 3 mile drive to work dropped the gauge 3 miles, today it dropped 6 miles. After I notice this happening, when I get out of my car, I can notice a faint smell of gasoline, stronger if I open my trunk. I've left the car running and looked for any leaks underneath, nothing. It doesn't drop when the car is off, but it will if the car is parked and running. Is there some small leak in the fuel line, or a loose fitting, maybe the fuel pump is going? Your guess is better than mine. The car has 145k miles on it if that helps.
