Why do you believe most conservatives think the left has gotten more and more "radical" in the last few years?

I was always surprised to hear conservatives say this, as I've always felt that it's been the opposite. How many conservatives would be in support of public schools if we tried to establish them today, for example?
But, anyways, what has changed? Have we actually swung far to the left? Why do Conservatives think we have?
