Why are so many Democrats in denial about the culture war?

I don’t mean to generalize, here I am specifically criticizing the Democratic leaders, the pundits, the opinion-makers etc. We have an utterly out of control, power-mad Republican party and everyone that’s got an iota or power in DC just seems to be in the dark about the hostility, hatred and vicious nature of their counterparts. It’s like one side brought a howitzer to a gun fight, and the other side brought a spoon because they thought there would be ice cream despite there being no indication that this was anything other than a gun fight.
