Advice for court appearance after traffic ticket

I was pulled and cited for ignoring a traffic signal. The police was who knows where, but from my perspective, I didn't have space to make a safe stop. I never saw the light turn red, it was yellow when I went under.
How can I explain that to the officer or the judge at my court date without sounding like an ass. The cop already was one at the stop. I tried to explain that he couldn't see what i was seeing from where ever he was compared to where i was.
