Can my roommate sue me for breaking a lease?

Hey guys so here's the rub, I signed a year lease with somebody I shouldn't have and now that I'm trying to break the lease and leave, they want me to pay for everything in terms of breaking the lease and is threatening to sue me should I try and make him pay his half. Can he do this? Do I have any recourse?
