Surface Pro 4 M.2 SSD Failed
Post Body

One from me this time please!
I have a user with an SP4, won't boot. Using a USB recovery drive, the recovery partition seems to be intact (512Mb), but the main drive (128Gb) is not mounting and not visible. Acronis boot stick agreed.

Drive would be Bitlockered (as is the default on that model) but key is thankfully stored centrally on paper. There was no cloud sync or backups. Approx 1Gb is "crucial data". The SP4 just stopped working whilst it was unattended (reviewed on CCTV - just failed to the recovery screen from displaying a document), no visible signs of prior drops or damages.

Seems to be a lot of stories on the web about this being common in SP4's - overheating of a controller chip - together with some joyous stories of "simple" recovery in services provided by (e.g.) Greenwood's lab.

To liberate the M2 I'd need to back off the screen adhesive which is a bit of an endeavour...

Any experiences / thoughts on data recovery chances from an SP4 in these circumstances?

If reasonable, is it best to keep the unit together or just send off the drive?

Mark "the man" for UK based issues like these?

Thank you all, happy Monday!
