When do you use a person´s full name in conversation?

Post Body

I've seen a few times in movies/series that sometimes people address other people by their full names even though they are on a first name basis. For example, in the BBC series Sherlock, Molly labels her Christmas present for Sherlock "Sherlock Holmes" and Sherlock says "Merry Christmas, Molly Hooper". In Hunger Games 5, Lucie Grey is also often addressed by Coriolanus by her full name. To my German ears, that sounds extremely strange, we actually only use the full name when we introduce someone/us. Please help and explain!

Edit: wow, thank you very much! I learned a lot!
