Can I claim my late fathers pension?

My father was a British citizen, and had a pension he paid into for most of his life
He passed away just before covid hit, so my family and I couldn’t visit the UK to try and sort this portion of the inheritance out
My dads friend (who is also British), said that it’s not possible to claim the pension of someone who has passed away
Is this true?
