What grammatical tense is more used in the UK simple past or present perfect?

Post Body

I want to learn the differences in the grammatical tenses on both sides of the ocean. If I want to be exact, past-simple vs. present-perfect. I know Americans might use simple-past to describe something that happened in the past as a complete action and a British person uses present-perfect to describe past circumstances with present consequences. Using the form ''I've finished.''

But I'm not certain 100% because this can be a personal choice or stylistic preference.

Any tips?
