Throughout college they kept lecturing me with professional/career “advice.” Last week my dad just lost out on a $40k pay bump because he didn’t tell me about it.

Post Body

I’m so fucking mad. For multiple reasons. The most AP like reason is because my parents always lecture me as if I’m an idiot and they’ve got it all figured out.

Right now I’m almost 23 and I make 6 figures. No help from them by the way. They know nothing about my field and neither went to college. My mom doesn’t work a white collar job and my dad’s is just like spreadsheets and stuff at the basic level, I can’t say much more but it’s not something a formal education gives you.

I recently heard them talk about how it was better not to switch jobs. Ex fucking cuse me? Where did this news come from. I interrogated him and he was reluctantly to tell me anything until I asked my mom.

Turns out he was offered a job doing similar work. Except 1. The office is closer, 2. The pay is a $40k bump, which is HUGE (more than a 50% increase), and 3. It’s hybrid so my dad can stop commuting 45min to work and back every day. Oh and did I mention that he pays an exorbitant amount of money for insurance and this company is probably gonna be way better?

I got mad obviously because his health isn’t the best and so the better insurance and that money and bump, plus being hybrid, is huge. My mom told me he ignored the LinkedIn recruiter because they both felt that he is comfortable with his current work and they don’t feel “comfortable” working with people they don’t know.

So my parents who aren’t in great health just passed up a very similar job, better insurance, hybrid option, and a 50% pay bump because of that tiny reason.

I’m so mad at them not just because this dumb choice but also they didn’t even think to consult me. They think they’ve got it all figured out with stuff like this and that I don’t know anything. I was lecturing them about this today and they kept saying like “okay okay stop talking okay.” You know it’s bad when they’re not scolding me. They just don’t want to hear it as they realize their mistake.

They kept justifying it. “We don’t even know if their insurance is better” (it’s a way bigger company and my dad complains their current insurance is shit like every week, and also you can ask). “Working with people you know is better because you can trust them more” (terrible career advice to never job hop because of unfamiliarity).

Literally it would’ve fixed 70% of their potential problems in the future. You know what their number one concern is? Their health. And number two is money. Well the opportunity was given to them on a silver platter and they rejected it.

This post isn’t just out of anger btw. It’s out of concern and distraught.
