Hair style help

I have pretty much had the same buzzcut since I was like 10. My hair is super coarse, straight and hard to style. I have tried to grow it last year but even the strongest gel was not strong enough to hold my hair in place - not sure what I did wrong there. As I get older Iām hoping to change my hairstyle and I would appreciate any recommendations from guys with similar hair texture. Not sure why I need at least 300 characters to submit a post so here it is! Thank you all in advance.
