How are tanks in PvP

I’m somewhat interested in playing tank and am wondering are they good/needed/wanted in large and small scale pvp?
Some aspects of them make me think they’d be great but I know they do like literally no damage so I wonder if most teams would rather just have another dps or support character over tank.
