are colored pencils an effective way to study color before using paint?

i’ve worked with ink, charcoal, and pencil for most of my life. i focus more on form, value, and movement than many colors, but i’ve been wanting to get into color more lately. i have a decent collection of prismacolor pencils that i’m working with, though colored pencil is not an appealing medium for me. is it adequate for practicing the use of color so i can move onto ink and paint later? it mixes poorly and i don’t like the texture, but i suppose it’s sufficient to get a feel for using color at all. pencil technique isn’t very transferable to paint.
