What are the differences between sketching and drawing? Looking to teach myself how to draw DnD Characters, but I'm not well-versed in art.

Are there key differences between sketching and drawing? Sketch pads? Drawing paper? Pencil types?

Don't mind super cheap investments, even better if I don't need to.

I've got Comp Notebooks, Printer Paper, Normal notebooks, cardstock, tons of 0.7 and 0.5 mm mechanical pencils laying around, normal pencils, Mirado Black Warrior pencils, normal Dixon pencils, typical HB pencils...even a calligraphy kit that comes with a drafting pencil.

Please help?
