Greeting everyone,
I am in the brain storming session for me next LARP kit (aren't we all) going with a 'slightly well off/not as poor infantry man' and now I've sped run the noobie kit mistakes (purchasing ill fitting padding and armor) I want my next kit to all be made to size and measurements and do it right. However I'm stuck on the chest piece and whether I want a open front 'Leed's' style brigandine or a German or Milanese style cuirass or breastplate. Obviously this won't be a cheap endeavor so I want to do a OCD amount of research and planning.
I like brigandines because its going to be a hell lot cheaper than a cuirass and a lot easier to put on without help (I've tried on some of my friends brigs). It is also very versatile since historically commoners and knights alike wore them. If I want to be a common foot soldier Ill just add a mail shirt or jack chains. If I want to be a knight/man at arms I'll just add plated arms, legs, sabatons and gauntlets. If I want to be an archer just wear it over a arming doublet... yeah you get the point. And brigandines have a certain unique style and charm of their own. I drew a lot of inspiration from the War of the Roses and Burgundian Wars for brigandine clad infantry.
Then we have cuirass or front only breast plates which are going to be more expensive, takes more time to put on and requires assistance to put on. But a well fitted and well made Germanic style breast plate/cuirass paired with a sallet and bevor is a work of art in itself and I always loved the look. I drew inspiration from late 15th century half armored Swiss halberdiers or slightly wealthier infantryman who could afford a half harness.
What are your thoughts ? Which do you prefer and why ? Happy to hear everyone's views. Happy discussions everyone.
